Scavenger for X Window System Dave Ashley's Scavenger Home Page

Download XWindows Scavenger (xscavenger-1.4.5.tgz) . It is only about 193K bytes.

Download SDL Scavenger (sdlscav-144.tgz) It is based on XScavenger-1.4.4 and a patch contributed by Olaf Leidinger and includes the newersdlscav.diff. I also fixed it so it should be 64bit safe, and fixed a compiler error related to a va_list use.

Update -- March 29, 2008 -- check out the sourceforge sdl scavenger version here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/sdlscavenger/

[Obsolete] Download SDL Scavenger (sdlscav-137.tgz) Here is a patch given to me by Frank Zago. It is a patch against sdlscav-137.tgz to make sdlscav work with newer versions of SDL. Here it is: newersdlscav.diff

Scavenger is a cool arcade/thinking game very much like Lode Runner. You've got to run around and collect objects while avoiding enemies. Some objects are buried and you've got to dig down to get at them. It's an addictive game and some of the levels are devilishly (cruelly) complicated to solve.

The game runs under Linux/Xwindows. It comes with a level editor so you can make your own levels. There is also a graphics/sprite editor built into the game to allow you to paint your own graphics.

The $20.00 prize was claimed Monday, October 27, 1997 by Torsten Zetzsche of Germany. He was the first person to complete all the Scavenger levels and send me the levels.scl file. Congratulations Torsten! Here is his movie file. For comparison, here is my movie file.

Here are some hints for some common "stopper" levels.

The Debian distribution should contain Scavenger. The debian maintainer is Marcus Brinkman .

The FreeBSD distribution of Scavenger is maintained by Eivind Eklund.

A NetBSD version of Scavenger is being maintained by Thomas Klausner. It is available here.
